Mobile World Congress & modu Mania

Posted by Oren Todoros

I'm back and rested after Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona, Spain. For all those in the mobile industry, this was an event not to be missed. The biggest names in mobile showcased everything they've got to offer, from new devices that are now hitting the market to concept phones we'll be seeing the very near future.

The buzz through the show was: Small is the new big! One of the names that made the biggest impact is modu. The worlds smallest and lightest phone "according to the Guinness book of records". Designed to slip into a variety of stylishly designed modu jackets, modu let's you create a new look for your mobile device while adding functionality that will instantly shape and reshape the way you communicate. This mean we get the best new features in a much shorter time frame at a lower cost.

Communication is no longer just about talking on the phone, communication can happen anywhere and at any time. This is the core of what modu's offering. whether you're a gamer, sports extremist, in the office or lounging around the house, modu will let you communicate through custom modu Jackets and Mates - allowing you to enjoy a brand new communication experience every time you need to stay in touch.

100 brave men and women "the whole modu team" made it's way to the Mobile World Congress armed with a bag full of Tic-Tacs to spread the news on modu, don't belive me? Watch the video bellow to see how it all went down.

Here's what Fabrizio Capobianco of the Funambol blog had to say about modu:

" There were few good hardware news. One was Modu. A very cool idea of a device that can have many "covers". The difference is that the covers transform the device from a smartphone to a dumbphone to a music player. Very interesting concept. Every carrier can build its cover and differentiate. And it is low cost. Wins the HW of the conference award from me. "

More news on modu to come, If you caught modu at MWC or want to share your experience of the show, post your comments!

Best Smartphones and Mobile Devices at CES 2008

Posted by Oren Todoros

CES 2008 in Sin City is just around the corner and I've been scouring the net to find any info I can related to new mobile devices that will be debuted at the show. There are a few I am betting on to take a good chunk of the market in 2008 while others will be more of a passing fad. Bellow are a few devices I'm looking forward to seeing however keep in mind that these devices may actually not be available at CES but the rumors of having a working demo of them is highly possible.

Meizu M8 MiniOne

A retail version may be available as early as February. Yes the Meizu does resemble the Iphone in many ways however Meizu has nothing to worry about when it comes to copyright infringements. Take a look as Samsung; I would categorize them as the world leaders in stealing other companies winning designs such as the Samsung blackjack. By the time a case like this goes to court "if ever", trial hearings and verdict, Meizu will have already sold millions of devices. The worst that can happen is that they can be ordered to cease selling the device which by that time they would have moved on to several other mobile devices anyway.

The Neonode N2

Participating at CES for the first time, Neonode: http://www.neonode.com
will exhibit its N2 mobile phone and new concepts. The Neonode N2 was actually released in the middle of 2007 in Europe so expect this to hit the streets everywhere else by early 2008. Applications on this device include: MP3 Player (MP3, WMA, Wav), Calendar and Address book synchronized using ActiveSync.

Ugly incarnations of the Google Android phone

You're more likely to catch updated versions of the Android at the World Congress confab, which starts Feb. 11 in Barcelona. My guess is that the Android will still make a guest appearance in all its clunky looking device glory. In all fairness, Google has made it clear that they're not in the business to produce mobile devices, but rather a Linux-based mobile phone platform named Android set to run on hundreds of mobile devices by industry leaders. From what the video footage shows, it's going to be a smooth ride.

I'm back from 3GSM Barcelona. I could write about the endless array of new devices that were displayed but I'd rather post a few pics and let them do the talking.

3GSM 2007: Motorola Q with shiny HSDPA

3GSM 2007: Motorola RIZR Z8 high speed phone

Aside from incredible mobile phones, There was enough eye-candy to last an entire week.

My personal favorite was the Alcatel Trailer / Booth.

Canada had strong participation at the event. Gotta love the Canadians with LCD's on their backs.

Counting Down to 3GSM Barcelona

Posted by Oren Todoros

I'll be attending the 3GSM Show in Barcelona this February.

This will be the first time I attend this show, I usualy go to Online Marketing related shows
so I'm really looking forward to networking with new faces from the Mobile Industry.

Here's a little background info related to the show...

Founded in 1987, the GSM Association (GSMA) is the global trade association representing more than 690 GSM mobile phone operators across 214 territories and countries of the world. In addition, more than 180 manufacturers and suppliers support the Association's initiatives as Associate Members.

Aside from what seems to be an incredible show, I'm also looking forward to discovering Barcelona City.
